Billfish Conservation with Nambas Fishing Vanuatu.

When it comes to game fishing in Vanuatu, nothing gets the adrenaline pumping like hooking into a powerful billfish. Marlin, sailfish, and spearfish are the ultimate test of skill and endurance, and for dedicated anglers, the thrill is in the chase. But there’s more to the sport than just the fight—true game fishing legends respect the fish and the future of the sport. That’s why at Nambas Fishing Charters, we’re committed to practicing and promoting responsible catch and release for billfish.

Why Catch and Release Matters

Billfish are apex predators that play a crucial role in the ocean’s ecosystem. Overfishing and improper handling have taken a toll on their populations in some parts of the world, and as anglers, we have a responsibility to ensure these incredible fish thrive for generations to come. Catch and release, when done correctly, allows us to enjoy the sport without negatively impacting fish stocks.

But here’s the thing—releasing a fish isn’t just about cutting the line and hoping for the best. If you want to maximize survival rates, it all comes down to professional boat handling, expert fish handling, and a crew that knows what they’re doing.

The Role of a Professional Captain and Crew

At Nambas Fishing Charters, we believe that proper catch and release starts long before the fish is even hooked. It’s a combination of skill, preparation, and execution. Here’s how we make sure every billfish has the best chance of survival:

1. Smart Boat Handling

A good release begins with good boat positioning. The way a captain manoeuvres the boat during the fight can make all the difference. By keeping the angler in control, reducing unnecessary exhaustion for the fish, and avoiding deep-hooking scenarios, we ensure the battle is as clean as possible. Once the fish is brought in, the captain's role shifts to keeping the boat moving just enough to keep water flowing over the fish’s gills—this is key for post-fight recovery.

2. Proper Tackle and Fighting Techniques

Using the right gear is essential. Heavy enough tackle reduces fight time, which prevents extreme exhaustion. Long battles can cause lactic acid buildup in billfish, making them vulnerable to predators after release. Our crew is trained to coach anglers on fighting techniques that bring the fish in strong, rather than drained.

3. Expert Fish Handling

Once the fish is at the boat, handling it properly is crucial. We never gaff billfish intended for release or bring them into the boat. Instead, we use specialized tools like de-hookers and Snooters. The goal is a quick, smooth release with minimal disruption to the fish, and of course a few photos.

4. Reviving the Fish Before Release

Not every fish can be released immediately. Some need a little extra care. By holding the fish by the bill or and keeping it upright in the water, we can move the boat forward at a slow pace, allowing oxygen-rich water to flow through its gills. When the fish starts to kick with power, it’s time to let it go—watching it swim away strong is just as rewarding as the fight itself.
